Italian for your holiday — the three scenes you really need

Your holiday is coming up, and you want to do more than just say "Grazie." Three scenes cover the moments that come up every day: café, asking for directions, market — and you practice them in a way that means you'll actually open your mouth when you're there.

For the next few minutes

For a holiday, you don't need a course — you need a handful of situations you can handle with confidence: ordering something, asking for directions, shopping at the market. Anyone who can manage these three moments will get through the day — and will then feel ready to tackle the rest.

You play through each scene in English first: who says what, when is it your turn, how does the moment unfold? Then the same scene in Italian — with the same voices. You recognize the flow and don't get hung up on individual words.

What matters is staying engaged: you take on your role, and the scene either waits for you — or moves on just like in a real café. That's exactly what you're training: responding while the moment is happening.

And because things never go entirely to script in real life, every scene ends with a surprise: a line you've never heard before. If you can respond to it — even imperfectly — you're ready for the real bar.

Step by step

  1. 1. Choose your scene

Café, asking for directions, or market — start with the moment that comes first.

  2. 2. Play it in English

Get to know the flow and timing, and take on your role.

  3. 3. Play it in Italian

Same voices, same flow — now in the language of your holiday.

  4. 4. Master the surprise

Respond to the new line — then you're ready for the real thing.

Common questions

Are three scenes really enough?

For the everyday moments: yes — café, getting your bearings, and shopping cover the essentials. And every scene you master lowers the threshold for everything unplanned, because you've practiced responding, not just memorizing phrases.

What if the response in real life is different from the one in the scene?

That's exactly what the surprise line in each scene is for: a reply you've never heard before. You're not practicing a script — you're practicing how to respond. That holds up even when the barista speaks faster than the exercise.

How close to the holiday is it still worth doing?

Even the evening before: each scene takes three to five minutes. Two run-throughs of the café scene, and your first order on arrival day is no longer a hurdle — it's a little moment to shine.
