Focusmate alternative: no account, no camera, no session you can miss
Focusmate books you into a video session with a real person. The Dojitai focus room does something smaller: it shows you a number — how many people are on the same beat right now. Both are called body doubling, but they are two different strengths.
Try it instead of reading about it
The room is open right now. Nothing is created when you enter one.
| Dimension | Focus room | Focusmate |
|---|---|---|
| Format | an open room on a fixed beat: 25 minutes of work, 5 minutes of break, the same clock for everyone | a 50- or 25-minute session with an assigned partner, camera on, goal stated out loud at the start |
| Accountability | none, by design — nobody sees you, nobody notices when you leave. The other side of that coin: there is no appointment to miss and no partner you can let down | high — a specific person is waiting for you and sees whether you showed up |
| Getting in | type a room name, share the link, you are in | create an account, book a slot, wait to be matched; free sessions are capped per week |
| Camera | none; the room shows a number and nothing else | video is part of the format |
| What the provider knows about you | nothing durable — a random token held in memory for 90 seconds, no cookie, no database row | an account, session history, ratings, a video connection |
| Language | English and German | English |
| Access without an account | yes — the room opens straight from the URL | account required |
A Flow Club alternative with no account: an open focus room on a fixed 25-minute beat, straight in the browser. Honest about what hosted sessions do better.
A Flown alternative with no account: an open focus room in the browser, 25 minutes on a shared clock. Honest about when guided deep-work sessions are the better choice.
A Caveday alternative with no account: an open focus room in the browser on a 25-minute beat. Honest about what facilitated three-hour blocks do better.
I kept booking Focusmate sessions and forgetting to show up. Is this any different?
Yes, in one specific way: there is nothing to show up to. The block starts every half hour whether you are there or not, so there is no session to book, none to miss, and no partner who was left waiting. That removes the shame loop — but it also removes the pull. If a booked appointment is the only thing that gets you to the desk, Focusmate is still the right tool, and this is not.
Is the focus room a full replacement for Focusmate?
No, and it is not trying to be. Focusmate sells accountability through an assigned person with a camera. The focus room sells nothing: it shows a number and a countdown. If you get up and walk away, nobody notices. For many people that is still enough — for some it is not.
Why is there no video?
Because video needs an account, a connection service, and a privacy policy that makes real promises. The room runs without any durable trace instead: your presence is a random token that disappears from memory 90 seconds after the last sign of life. That is a deliberate decision against features.
What does the focus room cost?
Nothing, and there is no paid tier. There is also no account that could later be turned into a subscription.
Can I sit with a specific person instead of strangers?
Yes. The room name is in the address — pass the link on and you are in the same room. Nobody has to approve anything, because there is nothing to approve.
How does the timer stay in sync without a server?
It is derived from the wall clock. A 25/5 block starts on every half hour, so two browsers anywhere compute the same remaining time without talking to each other. The only thing the server holds is the presence count.
