Voice trembling right before your presentation — what to do?
Three minutes before you go on, your voice is trembling, your mouth is dry. Here you build a vocal routine in 60 to 180 seconds that works exactly right now.
For the next few minutes
Voice trembling can occur together with breath, muscle tension, and looping thoughts. In two minutes you can try a short routine; this page does not determine any physical cause.
Breath first: four seconds in through the nose, six seconds slowly out through slightly parted lips. Repeat only as many times as feels comfortable; the exercise does not measure or guarantee any change in heart rate.
Then body: let your jaw drop loose, roll your shoulders once, move your tongue. This releases the most common vocal blocks.
Finally, mental: one single sentence in your head, precise and short. Not "you've got this," but "the first 30 seconds belong to the breath, then I begin."
Step by step
1. Breathe three times 4-6
Four seconds in, six out. Six repetitions.
2. Loosen your jaw and shoulders
Let your jaw drop, roll your shoulders once.
3. Say one sentence out loud
Low, slow. Any sentence will do.
4. Go in with the plan
"First 30 seconds breath, then I begin."
Common questions
Don't I have too little time for something like this?
You always have 60 seconds. The bathroom before your appointment is enough space for the whole sequence. That's the point of the short version.
Does this work online too?
You can use the routine before an online appointment as well. Whether it helps you is best heard in a quick test sentence; the camera doesn't automatically make the effect stronger.
What if my voice still trembles?
Speak slower and lower than usual. Trembling becomes audible when the voice is too high and too fast — both can be changed in 5 seconds.
