Instant helpCaregiving, carers, overload

No time for myself in caregiving — and that's slowly making me hard

You don't need a self-care lecture right now. You need a step small enough to actually fit into the reality of caregiving.

For the next few minutes

Caregivers are often served self-care as an extra task. That only raises the pressure further. When you have nothing left to give, 'do more for yourself' is rarely helpful.

The more useful step is smaller and less spectacular: sitting for a minute, putting down a glass, setting a limit on a call, asking for something specific rather than general. Not wellness, but a return to your own body.

You don't have to earn that minute. If you wait until everything is taken care of, it almost never comes. In caregiving, that space often has to be created before the end of the day, not after.

Step by step

  1. 1. Find a real one-minute gap

Not later — somewhere within the day as it already exists.

  2. 2. Mark that space physically

Sit down, have a drink, loosen your shoulders, lift your gaze.

  3. 3. Formulate one small boundary or request

Specific enough that it's possible today.

Common questions

But a minute doesn't really do anything.

A minute won't reset your whole system. But it can be the first moment where you're not just reacting — where you're briefly present again.

Why does this make me hard or irritable so quickly?

Because constant self-interruption often turns into irritability. That's frequently a sign of not enough space, not a lack of love.
