ADHD sensory overload — the mind is just too full right now

It's not that there's "too much going on" — it's too much happening at once inside your head. Here is the 90-second sequence that lowers the sensory level without you having to leave the room.

For the next few minutes

During sensory overload, it can be hard to separate important from unimportant input. This page takes your experience seriously, but does not provide a neurological explanation or an ADHD diagnosis.

One possible first step is to briefly limit your sensory input: use headphones, close your eyes, or direct your attention to a single physical sensation — like the feeling of your feet on the floor.

After that, you can breathe in for four seconds and out for six, if that feels comfortable. Observe your perception; the exercise measures neither heart rate nor sensory level.

What you should NOT do right now: open another tab, explain the situation to someone, or judge yourself for feeling overwhelmed. First narrow the filter, then breathe, then come back.

Step by step

  1. 1. Narrow the channel

Ears closed, eyes closed, or both for 30 seconds.

  2. 2. One steady physical sensation

Feet on the floor, hand on the table. Just that one.

  3. 3. Breathe 4-6, six cycles

Four in, six out. Don't let it count for you — count yourself.

  4. 4. Return with one thing

Pick up one task again. Not all of them.

Common questions

Why does narrowing the filter help more than taking a break?

Both can work differently for different people. Limiting individual sources of stimulation is more concrete than just the word "break"; whether it helps you is something you'll notice in the present moment.

What if I don't have headphones?

You can briefly cover your ears with your hands or find a quieter spot. This is a practical alternative, not a clinically equivalent tested intervention.

Is this relevant for autism too?

This sequence has not been validated for any specific diagnosis. If sensory overload occurs frequently or causes significant distress, a professional, individually tailored assessment may be worthwhile.
